Wedding Season is upon us! Whether you’re a bride ticking off your pre-wedding prep or a guest wanting to make a special hand-made contribution to your nearest and dearest’s big day, you’ll want to hear about our inspiring Wedding Workshops. Join in at home and learn how to create a series of beautiful makes (and bakes!) for weddings, parties and more.

We’ve already shown you how to make paper cut cake toppers and a delicious “naked” wedding cake at home, and now it’s time to adorn yourself with a beautiful home-made flower crown. Perfect for weddings, festivals, hen parties and more, these hip headbands are right on trend and make the most of fresh, seasonal blooms. Our friends at fabulous Manchester-based florist, Frog Flowers, joined us to show you how to make your very own flower crown. Here’s how!

Flower Crown

You will need:
(all items available online or from your local florist)
Floristry aluminium wire
Floristry tape (Stemtex)
Scissors
Wire cutters
Selection of different-sized flowers (filler flowers, small flowerheads and larger statement flowers)
Foliage, ideally a range of different of textures and shapes
Ribbon (optional)

Cut a piece of floristry wire and place it around your head where you want the finished crown to sit, checking that it’s long enough to fit comfortably with enough extra wire at the back of your head to cross the ends over and secure the crown. Uncross and remove the floristry wire from your head.

Using the green floristry tape, cover the full length of the long length of wire, sticking it down diagonally so that the wire has a thin covering of tape.

Now for the fun part! Select the flowerheads that you want to use for the crown and cut them into short pieces with roughly 2cm of stem, then do the same for the foliage. You will always need more than you think, so cut lots of little pieces.

Using the floristry tape and beginning at one end of the long length of wire, take a piece of foliage or a bloom and place the stem on the wire. Stick it in place by wrapping it tightly to the wire with the floristry tape. Continue in this way, placing individual blooms and foliage running in the same direction. Be creative! You might want a big statement bloom at one end or a section of just foliage. Make it as whimsical or as neat as you fancy!

When you get to the end of the wire, reverse the direction of the foliage to ensure that it covers the looped wire closure.

When you’ve finished covering the wire with blooms and foliage, loop it around your forehead, then link the ends together at the back of your head, crossing them over to secure the crown. Et voila!

Top tip Add pretty ribbon to the wire loops to make a beautiful bow at the back.
