The Story Behind Our Prints: Christmas 2019
Print designer Alice Preston is happiest when drawing prints and feeling creative. This year, she helped design the Cath Kidston Christmas prints, where the team delved deep into the past to conjure up happy memories from this time of year. Here she gives us the low-down on three of her favourites from the festive season.
“This celebratory print has had the most amazing response at Cath Kidston head office, and also the store managers that have come to see the collections, everyone loves it. We wanted it to be really fun and celebratory to reflect the time of year. I love the dark background because the other colours come to life on top of it. What is also really special about this one is we have expanded on it with embroideries, gold finishes and placements.”
“This is one of our archive designs that we had previously done in really bright neon colours, it was a little crazy, but looked incredible! It’s a great print, that did really well and we loved the idea of creating it in a really rich colourway. So, to fit the Christmas palette we chose rich, jewel colours like pinks and yellows to sit on navy – to feel like twilight when everything becomes magical. It has a glamorous winter feel that is fun, but not too obviously Christmas.”
“Our Christmas Village print is full of joy. We wanted it to be celebratory and to reflect all the things people do at this time of the year. We have the markets, Christmas scenes and fairground rides. Two of the Cath Kidston dogs also appear in there – they always make an appearance, which is important as people love them: they are our mascots and it’s good to see that they are still staying strong.”
