Q&A Time With Disney Illustrator, Kei Philips

We caught up with Kei Philips, the incredibly talented Disney Illustrator and artist behind our adventurous new Jungle Book X Cath Kidston collection! Kei reveals a bit about her dream of becoming a professional illustrator and her special process in bringing the well-loved Disney Jungle Book characters to life.

Q: What initially got you on the path to becoming an illustrator?

I have loved drawing since I was a child. Growing up watching Disney animations inspired me to study art and animation and eventually become a professional artist.

Q:  Which is your favourite Jungle Book character to draw and why?

Baloo is my favourite, he is such a fun and happy character.

Q: How do you choose the colours of each character?

Each Disney character has a set of colours associated with them that is true to their original animation.

Q:  Disney are famous for their beautiful animations, what makes them so special?

Disney animations are timeless and magical, this is what I think makes them special.

Q: What top tips would you give to someone looking to pursue a career in illustration?

Draw, draw, draw! The best advice I can give is to practice drawing as much as possible. Build a good portfolio of work and welcome feedback on your work. Never stop trying to improve.

Q: Do you have tips on how to show the characters personalities via an illustration?

Tips on how to show your character’s personality… think about storytelling when planning your illustration, what is your character doing and why? Then sketch it out and push that pose as much as possible. Does the pose work as a silhouette? This will help create a convincing portrayal of your character’s personality.

Q: Can tell us your favourite product from the collection?

The Jungle Book Waterlily River placement tote bag, I could see myself carrying all my Bare Necessities in that lovely tote!

Q: What’s the best thing about your job?

The best part of my job is getting to draw all of my favourite Disney characters on a daily basis.

Q: What is the most memorable moment in your career so far?

The most memorable moment of my career was first seeing my artwork on products being enjoyed globally by so many people.

Q: What would your Bare Necessities be for a trip to the Jungle?

Sun cream for sure and bug repellant!
