This summer we’ve gone character crazy! Our Bags to School collection is jam-packed with brilliant kit for kids, and we’re championing our characterful prints with a fun crafty competition. We’ve pitted Derek the Dino and Peggy the Pony against each other, and we want to see you bring them to life with your makes! Here’s some crafty Peggy the Pony inspiration that’s sure to get you galloping…
Shrink Pony Necklace
This little charm necklace is the perfect accessory for pony mad kids! It’s really easy to make with a little shrink plastic and basic jewellery supplies. Use our Pony templates for the shapes or draw your own, and colour in and decorate however you choose!
You will need
1 A4 sheet white shrink plastic
Baking parchment and baking tray
Craft varnish and paint brush
Chain necklace with large links (at least 1.8mm)
Seven jewellery jump rings
To make the necklace
Use the templates provided and draw out one of each pony, three stars and two horseshoes onto the rougher side of the shrink plastic (below left). You can draw your own shapes if you prefer – they should be about 6-10cm in size. Colour in and add detail to the shapes using colouring pencils, (not watercolour pencils or pens as the colour will leak once shrunk) sticking to lighter colours as they will darken as the shapes shrink (below right). Take a look at our Pony print for colour inspiration!
Pre-heat the oven as per the shrink plastic instructions. Cut the shapes out and hole punch each one in the centre, about 5mm from the top edge (below left). Place on a baking tray lined with a sheet of parchment paper, spaced well apart, and pop the tray in the oven. This is the fun bit! Watch as the shapes curl about and shrink down dramatically in size, which takes around 5 minutes. Once they have fully flattened back down, remove them from the oven and set aside to cool. It won’t take long.
If you want the charms to have a little shine, paint them with a layer of craft varnish (below, top left). Be careful that the varnish doesn’t get stuck in the holes – if it does you can always poke it out with a cocktail stick or sharp pencil. Once the varnish is dry, use pliers to open up one of the jewellery jump rings a little. Measure to find the centre of the necklace and hook the ring on. Place the first charm onto the open jump ring then close it up over the necklace link (below, top right). Close the jump ring again with pliers.
Measure 3cm along from the charm on the necklace and attach the second one in the same way. Continue until all the charms are added (above). And there you have it – one Peggy the Pony necklace, ready to be taken for a ride!
