My Mug and Me

Jim Cooper

Gardener at Carskiey House

Our Autumn Winter shoot location.

I came to Carskiey House nearly 2 years ago after working at the golf club. My partner of 26 years, Bev, works in the house and when she told me there was a gardening position going, I fancied a change and loved the idea of working in the gardens at Carskiey.

Now I am here, I look after all aspects of the garden. At the moment Tom, the owner, is developing the garden in a big way. Before he bought the house it was very overgrown with sheep roaming the lawns. I am helping Tom put it back to its former glory.

Some of my favourite plants include tree ferns and the palm trees. Whilst you would expect palms to be more indigenous to Cornwall, you actually get quite a lot of them growing here as there is very rarely a frost. I also love the azaleas and the peonies. I like the spring best as that’s when the garden comes to life. The summers here are lovely too, but there are too many midges!

What’s your favourite mug?

It has to be the Stanley mug featuring the fun Animal Band print. I also love the saxophone playing fox as it really makes me laugh. As I work outdoors I regularly see a lot of wildlife, and these mugs are a way of taking a little piece of nature back indoors with me.

What’s your favourite drink?

I am a tea addict! I like it with sweeteners and milk. You can’t go wrong with a good old fashioned cuppa!

What’s your favourite biscuit?

I’m quite partial to a Custard Cream, but to be fair I love all kinds of biscuits! I used to be a dunker, but I don’t dunk any more – I like them to be crunchy.
